Bergamo comprises two cities: Bergamo Bassa and Bergamo Alta. The latter, an old medieval town, rises on a green hill, accommodating a wealth of lovely piazzas, historic churches and palaces. Bergamo Bassa on the other hand is the lower of the two and was built mainly during the 19th and 20th centuries. Presently, it is the business heart of Bergamo. The area was settled in the Roman times. The heart of Bergamo then was the hilly Bergamo Alta, while the valley below was dotted with farms and villas.
