Bergamo comprises two cities: Bergamo Bassa and Bergamo Alta. The latter, an old medieval town, rises on a green hill, accommodating a wealth of lovely piazzas, historic churches and palaces. The area was settled in the Roman times. The heart of Bergamo then was the hilly Bergamo Alta, while the valley below was dotted with farms and villas.
